The Black Rider (Soundtrack)
Waits wrote this theatrical piece with legendary underground novelist William S. Burroughs and avante-garde stage director Robert Wilson, based on a 19th-century German fable about a file clerk who makes a deal with the devil. Waits composed the music and lyrics, and while the haunting, dark score shows its roots in German expressionist theater, a lovely ballad like “I’ll Shoot the Moon” stands easily alongside Waits’ most affecting songs.
